A car needs to be strong to keep the passengers safe. But it also needs to be as lightweight as possible to increase fuel efficiency and the less metal used in building the car, the cheaper it can be. There are places on a car where one part needs to be thick and strong while the other could be thinner. But they have to work as one piece. Enter TWB Company, LLC which laser-welds parts for cars. The laser heats the edges of the metal so hot that when they are connected, they become one piece of continuous metal. TWB makes these parts, or blanks, for a variety of manufacturers and uses on cars.

How did the business start?

Gathering of workers in 1976 to celebrate revenue milestone

In 1955, John H. McConnell saw an opportunity to make steel parts. He borrowed $600 from the bank, promising if he couldn’t pay it back they could take his car, and set up his shop in Worthington, Ohio, right outside Columbus. By 1968 the company had grown to multiple locations and all employees were salaried vs. hourly. In 1976, after just 21 years in business, the company celebrated $100 million in sales.

What challenges are you facing?

We became TWB in 2021, so we haven’t been around very long. The former company that was in these facilities didn’t manage their business the way we do. We feel that taking care of your people first, and treating everyone the way they want to be treated, will result in them feeling good about the work they do and be a part of the team. We need to overcome the old company reputation and build our own. And that takes time. Our associates are definitely helping spread the word about our culture and the way we operate.

Where are your customers and suppliers located?

The majority of our materials are steel and that is made regionally. We get the steel primarily from Cleveland and other parts of Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. Our customers are mostly in Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, and Kansas.

Does your company focus on any sustainability efforts?

Worthington Steel, our parent company, tracks Green Star Awards at all our plants. We have goals and numbers we need to achieve in recycling and reusing materials. All of our steel is recycled as steel can be recycled back into new steel.

How does your business interact with government?

Liftgate Part

We host political leaders regularly and offer tours and information about what we do. We find that helps as they make laws and think through problems because they know us, they have seen our plant, and aren’t just listening to other people. We also support the Northern Medina County Chamber of Commerce, Valley City Community Group, and Medina County Economic Development Corporation

How does someone get a job with you?

Workers at Worthington Industries

We post all of our open positions on our website. We also get referrals from our associates which we love because they come in understanding who we are and what we do.

Why do employees like to work here?

Our founder, John McConnell, has written a book called, “Our Golden Rule” that is the foundation of everything we do. The quote, “We treat our customers, employees, investors, supporters, as we would like to be treated,” by John is everywhere, throughout our facilities. Our employees also love how much advancement opportunities there are.
