Benchmark of Seville has created exhibits and designs for all kinds of applications. If you visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the Akron Children’s Museum, the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, or the Exploratorium in Mobile, Alabama, you will see some of their exhibits. You might see their semis leaving Seville in March to hit the road and provide the entire interactive experience for a variety of motorcross and motorcycle brands including Ducati, BMW, and Harley Davidson. And they also design restaurants to give them a unique look and feel that make diners want to come back. No two days are the same at Benchmark!

What challenges are you facing?
It is very difficult to find people right now who are interested in working, learning, and growing. Those three attitudes are vital to what we do because no two days are the same. And the problems we solve are really unique – one day we may be building a a display out of wood and the next figuring out what we can coat an historic uniform with to make it durable enough for visitors to touch it in a display. If they don’t like lots of new problems to solve, they aren’t going to like it here!
Where are your customers and suppliers?

We work with companies all over the world. We always try to find products locally first, then Medina County, then Northeast Ohio, and then we go out further. We like knowing the people behind the products. Our customers are in the United States at this point, but almost all of the U.S.
Does your company focus on any sustainability efforts?

We have been ahead of the game in not using volatile organic compounds or VOCs, which are bad for the environment and for people working with them. We aren’t required to cut them out, but we feel strongly about being as safe as possible. We are working to reduce paper and do as much online as possible. And then we’re working with organizations to recycle our scrap.
How does your business interact with government?

We have to comply with a variety of rules and laws including MSD and OSHA. There are specific ways to handle certain types of materials and we post everything and train our staff on exactly what to do. OSHA is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and they make sure workers are always safe. We want our workplace to be the safest so we can focus on getting the job done.
How does someone get a job with your company?

We have had a lot of success with recruiters. A recruiter takes what we need in a position and goes out to find the person that could do the job. It saves us a lot of time as we don’t interview people who don’t fit what we need. We work hard and we also have fun so we need people who can work with us and also enjoy our Friday parties and working together.
Why do people like to work here?
For people with trade skills like carpenters, electricians, etc. they often get work and then get laid off when the project is over. Here, the work is steady and consistent. No one does any one thing for too long so the variety and the kinds of problems we solve are always different. We’re a very tight-knit group and have a lot of personal respect for each other. We love to celebrate the wins and we always examine the losses so we can improve.
