When metal is formed, it is shipped in great big coils to companies that need to use it. But many companies don’t use great big sheets of metal – they need something smaller. That’s where Three D Metals comes in. They can cut the coils into the size a company needs. They can cut steel, aluminum, copper, bronze, brass, and filler material used in welding. They also can cut seamless pipe, which means it is smooth all the way around, and ship that to customers. They are the only company in Northeast Ohio to be able to get customers the lengths of pipe they need!

How did the business start?

David D. Dickens was a sales person for several companies who provided cutting services when he decided he could do things better for his customers if he could provide the service directly. His wife’s name is Donna, his son is David Jr., and his daughter is Denise so he named the company Three D Metals after the three most important people in his life. The company now has nine locations in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
What challenges are you facing?

There is a lot of opportunity for new business but we are limited by the number of people we can find to hire. We need people who want to learn, want to be part of a team, and are willing to do the work. Right now we are only working two shifts but we would love to add a third if we could find people to work it.
Where are your customers and suppliers located?

Steel is produced by a number of companies and is one of the few resources in the world that is completely recyclable. We buy our steel from recyclers and the biggest one is in Indiana. Our customers send their scraps to be recycled and the cycle continues. Copper comes from a number of places including New York and Pennsylvania, and then Chile, Peru, and Europe. It is really a global product. Aluminum is from Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and a little from overseas. Our customers are all over the world and sometimes we have to deliver to a GPS coordinate rather than an address because the building hasn’t been built yet!
Does your company focus on any sustainability efforts?

We have sustainability in our core mission. We have a wind turbine in front of our building that supplies about 10% of the power we use. We also have a commitment to be a zero landfill facility. It means we get creative when we have something we don’t need. We have been committed to recycling and energy efficiency for a very long time because we felt it was the right thing to do. We’re glad to see other companies getting involved!
How does your business interact with government?

We typically don’t interact with government much. We host tours for elected officials and get involved in calls, etc. to help them understand how things are going. We are more involved locally in that our County Commissioners are very business-friendly and know about us. We support a number of programs in Valley City including the Frog Jump and other community events. We have a trade association to help with the bigger issues.
How does someone get a job with you?

Anyone can apply on our website or answer an ad we post on LinkedIn or Indeed. We really like when someone comes into the office to apply. We get a chance to show them around and have them meet potential team members so they can see if they would like it before they even fill out paperwork.
Why do employees like to work here?
We are really a family environment. And in our family, that means we eat a lot! We want to take care of each other so on hot days we’ll have a snow cone truck come out and other days we’ll have BBQ. We are constantly surveying our employees to make sure we know how they feel about things and what they want. And they all say they love being a part of our family.
